Ministry of Agriculture: rigid demand for food products in the next ten years

November 14, 2022

In the next ten years, China's population is still in the rising period, and the demand for commodity Food Products will show a rigid growth trend. To meet the total consumption demand and new demand is mainly through increasing production and reducing losses.

Vegetables, Freeze Dried Vegetables, Dried PeppersDried Vegetables are basic agricultural products for urban and rural residents, and ensuring the supply of vegetables is a major livelihood issue. Since the reform and opening up, China's vegetable industry has developed rapidly, playing an important role in ensuring market supply and increasing farmers' income. At the same time, it must be noted that the development of the vegetable industry also has prominent problems such as large market price fluctuations and unstable product quality. The Party Central Committee and The State Council attach great importance to the development of the vegetable industry. In 2010, The State Council issued three documents, which put forward a series of requirements for strengthening the production and circulation of vegetables and ensuring market supply, and called for the formulation of a national vegetable industry development plan.

There are many kinds of vegetables in China, and the cultivation area is vast. But for a long time, extensive planting has been the main method, and the scientific and technological content is not high. With the improvement of people's living standards and the development of science and technology, especially after China's accession to the WTO, people have higher and higher requirements for the quality of vegetables. Compared with the developed countries in the world, China's vegetable production is still at a lower level of production, which needs to be further improved

In the next decade, the population of China will still be in a rising period, and the demand for commercial food will also show a rigid growth trend. According to the statistics of the agricultural sector, in 2010, China’s per capita vegetable consumption was 370 kg, and by 2020, China’s newly added population will be nearly 100 million people, and accordingly the per capita vegetable consumption will increase by 30 basis. Kilograms, in addition, demand for processed vegetables will also increase by 10 million tons, when China's total vegetable demand is 58.95 million tons, an increase of 89.5 million tons from 2010. Meeting total consumer demand and new demand is mainly addressed by increasing yields and reducing losses.

In order to meet people's rigid demand for vegetables, agriculture departments at all levels will achieve adequate vegetable supply, variety, and balanced supply by stabilizing the area, increasing unit production, adjusting structure, and reducing losses, in order to prevent price fluctuations. The specific requirement is that the sown area of vegetables in the country will remain basically stable, and the average annual yield will increase by more than 1 percentage point. In 2015, it will reach 2,300 kg/mu, and by 2020 it will reach 2,500 kg/mu; the annual loss rate of vegetables will be reduced by more than 1 percentage point.

While ensuring the basic balance of total supply and demand, agricultural departments at all levels will further adjust the variety structure, optimize the regional layout and improve the supply capacity in the off-season. In terms of variety structure, leaf vegetables should be added appropriately according to the demand; In terms of regional structure, a reasonable transportation radius should be gradually formed; In the marketing season, improve the supply capacity of off-season vegetables.

While ensuring adequate supply of vegetable quantity and varieties, the agricultural department will also comprehensively improve the quality and safety level of vegetables, so that products meet the national quality and safety standards for agricultural products and national food safety standards. The commercialized vegetable processing rate will increase to 50% in 2015 and 60% in 2020.
